1. a perch of the western coast of the United States that bears live young.
2. = menhaden. (Cf.menhaden)
[American English, apparently short for earlier pauhagen, paughaden the menhaden, perhaps < Algonkian (Abnaki) pookagan < a verb, meaning “one manures the land” (apparently the fish was used as fertilizer)]
